In short - Blue Lagoon rocks! We were there on Wed 9/16/09 and the visibility was easily 30 feet in Lagoon 2, and only slightly less in Lagoon 1. Parking, and covered wood pavilions right at the water, walk-in entries, many shipwrecks and swim thru toys. Even a bunch of tiny fish that looked like fountain darters. Water was 82F with no thermocline. Max depth is around 25 so a tank lasts a long time. And since I live west of the Tx Continental Divide -- all the green sure looked good. _Great_ diving.

Dove Stillhouse a couple of weeks ago. Viz was 5' at best. _Very_ sharp thermocline at 31 feet. Warm body, dangling hand - freezing. Finally dropped into the colder water looking for better viz. Never found it. Computer said the temp was 66 degrees. I got numb after about 10 minutes and coming up sure felt good.
Comparatively, Travis hasn't been so bad. Pecan grove starts about 60 feet. Windy Pt private platforms are way out of the water (10+ ft). During the week the viz has been 10+ feet, below 15 feet. And the temps are still around 72F at 65 feet. Weekends viz hasn't been as good. If anyone is Spring Lake qualified the diving there was fantastic. The coonstail died off and all kinds of things are visible now. But the flow rate is so low divers have recently been limited to the Arch site. |

This weekend was the DUI dry suit demo at Windy Pt, Lake Travis. Fri and Sat AM were both rainy but Sun was clear and warm and lots of people were over on the private side when we got there after church. The public side wasn't too crowded. They are letting you drive way out on the point and it's only a few steps from the vehicles to the water. There were 2 other divers ahead of us and another pulled in as we were getting into the water.
I had my White's but my dive buddy braved the 63-61 degree water in a 3 mil + dive skin. And gloves and hood. We went to 70 feet and considering the rain the wind and the waves, the visibility was better than I expected. Found a pocket of 20+ ft viz at 40 fee. It was more like 10 feet at depth. Next time we're talking about going off the far end, figuring we'll drop in right on top of the big grottos. Dive season is getting started. :) |
